A private family office, is seeking an experienced, highly-motivated and entrepreneurial individual to serve as the Director of its venture capital portfolio. The portfolio is focused on seed and early stage (series A and B) investments in female-founded or female-led companies and funds. Today, just 2% of venture capital funds go to women-led startups. The portfolio’s objective is to catalyze market activity and solutions to close this funding gap.
The private family office has an overarching impact strategy to support women’s and children’s issues. Initiatives are advanced through a broad set of tools including investments, grants and advocacy. While the mission is focused on impact, the strategy is to invest capital solely at market-rate returns.
Portfolio Strategy – Key Characteristics:
Dedicated investment vehicle
Targeting market rate returns or better
$250k – $10M investment size range
10-year investment horizon with patient capital
Typical investments will be minority; in certain circumstances a control investment can be considered
North American focused
Portfolio currently consists of 13 companies and 9 funds
Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will lead the strategy development, implementation, and ongoing oversight of the Ingeborg Investments portfolio. This includes sourcing opportunities as well as running the diligence and closing processes. He/she will be a resource to portfolio companies to help them achieve business goals. Moreover, he/she will help the Principal evolve the fund into a platform that broadly supports its founders through strategic communications, events and initiatives aligned with the Principal’s impact priorities. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include:
Strategy Development and Portfolio Management
Help refine the fund strategy based on the Principal’s vision and objectives
Advise the Principal on potential deals, return upside and potential risks
Make investment recommendations to the Principal for new and follow-on transactions
Execute post investment monitoring, management, and support; take a proactive role in building strategic relationships with and serving as a resource for founders
Develop and produce comprehensive portfolio updates, performance reporting, and research for presentation to and discussion with the Principal
Measure and evaluate realized and unrealized returns at both the total portfolio and portfolio company levels, establishing appropriate benchmarks
Responsible for exit / liquidity management
Actively monitor trends that may impact the strategy or portfolio
Deal Sourcing and Execution
Lead transactions from deal origination / sourcing process to closing
Build relationships with angel / early-stage investors, corporate financiers, M&A bankers and other strategic networks to deliver high quality deal flow
Meet with founders and entrepreneurs, attend relevant networking events and evaluate new prospects
Execute full investment underwriting process
General
Build a platform that supports portfolio companies, beyond just deploying capital
Think creatively about using communications, events and research to advance portfolio companies and the office’s wider priorities
Leverage the family office’s shared investment team resources (tax, legal, investment support) as needed to support the portfolio’s strategy
Contribute to Ingeborg Investments publications / online content and strategic events
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:
10 years of direct investing experience with a well-regarded venture capital or growth capital private equity firm, or a related investment organization making similar style investments
Demonstrated investment track record originating and leading complex equity investments
Bachelor’s degree; MBA preferred
Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills
Entrepreneurial (or intrapreneurial) experience, taking and managing associated risks and working in early-stage companies
Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Client service orientation
A high standard of integrity and ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality
