Position Summary
The Builders Asset Management (BAM) team manages an institutional multi-asset class portfolio, including significant ESG and impact investments. The BAM team is seeking a Vice President (VP), Private Investments to join the team and lead diligence and monitoring of private investment funds and co-investment opportunities. BAM-led private investments largely comprise impact-oriented investments across multiple sectors and sub-asset classes. The VP, Private Investments will source, analyze, and execute investments across asset classes such as venture capital, private equity, debt, real estate and infrastructure.
As part of a Builders Vision’s integrated impact platform that prioritizes collaboration across the asset management, direct investment and philanthropic teams, the VP, Private Investments would have exposure to leaders across the organization and our collective portfolio of impact-forward relationships with companies, investors and NGOs.
Key Responsibilities
Help lead the research and decision-making process for private investments and overall portfolio structure of the BAM-led private investment portfolio. Manage strategic relationships for the portfolio and engagement opportunities with GPs and, selectively, portfolio companies.
Identify high-quality investment opportunities – generally funds and/or co-investments alongside fund managers - aligned with BAM investment priorities and strategies, including renewable energy, food and agriculture, and oceans, among others. This could involve landscaping asset classes or impact focus areas, and screening from a multitude of opportunities to determine which merit in-depth resources.
Implement and oversee the quantitative and qualitative analysis of investment opportunities, including analysis of investment merits and considerations.
Produce written and presentation materials to communicate investment analysis and recommendations to investment committee for consideration.
Implement and oversee ongoing monitoring and oversight of existing investments, including review of any manager-provided correspondence/reporting, responding to follow-on capital raises or co-investment opportunities, etc.
Review financial and impact performance of existing private fund managers, and evaluation new fund managers.
Contribute to maintaining and improving investments systems and processes for tracking manager information, documentation and managing deadlines.
Lead the development of a range of client deliverables and special projects such as thematic landscape analyses, investment impact-related initiatives and reporting.
Direct and oversee the work and development of junior colleagues supporting all of the above.
Qualifications required for success
A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in private investments – preferably at an investment bank, commercial bank, consulting firm, investment fund or family office; to include leading investments, due diligence processes and supervising junior colleagues
MBA and/or CFA is preferred
Skills and Abilities for success
Critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, and project management skills
Knowledge of private investment due diligence processes
Demonstrated ability to execute financial analysis of investment opportunities using Excel
Strong proficiency presenting complex concepts in PowerPoint and writing investment memoranda in Word; experience with Bloomberg, Factset, Salesforce or Asana a plus
Strong capacity to collaborate with teams in multiple geographic locations, as well as with internal and external stakeholders
Ability to develop and socialize new strategies and investment thesis, and then execute against them successfully
Excellent communication skills – able to articulate ideas, communicate tactfully, give and receive feedback
Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and multi-task
Attention to detail
Adaptability to a rapidly changing environment, including reprioritization or reassignment of responsibilities
Demonstrated experience in private impact investing, experience in climate-oriented investment sectors highly valued
